Babcock is looking for a Senior Maintenance Engineering Technician (Weapons) to join the team based in Devonport, Auckland.
About the role
Join a skilled team working at the heart of New Zealand’s defence capability. As a Senior Maintenance Engineering Technician (Weapons), you’ll play a key role in developing, updating, and maintaining written instructions for planned preventative maintenance tasks. This desk-based role is focused on translating technical knowledge into clear, actionable documentation that supports the safe and effective operation of weapons systems across the fleet.
While primarily office-based, the role includes site visits to inspect equipment and gather insights as part of maintenance investigations. You’ll work closely with maintainers, operators, OEMs, subject matter experts, and Defence stakeholders to ensure maintenance procedures are accurate, practical, and aligned with operational needs.

About you
You are a skilled and hands-on engineering technician with strong experience in weapons or mission systems maintenance. You enjoy solving problems, thinking critically, and producing reliable, practical engineering solutions. You’re familiar with maintenance systems, confident working independently, and thrive in a collaborative technical environment. You bring solid knowledge of maintenance documentation and are always keen to learn and improve. You’re proud to contribute to New Zealand’s defence readiness and excited by the challenge of working in a high-stakes industry.
8 Key Required Skills
- 4+ years’ experience in weapons or mission systems engineering
- Strong hands-on diagnostic and technical troubleshooting ability
- Understanding of computer maintenance management systems (e.g., CMMS)
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Understanding of maintenance standards and documentation
- Proven ability to deliver timely, practical engineering solutions
- Competent with technical documentation and engineering analysis
- Strong teamwork and collaboration in technical settings
Key Required Qualifications
- Technical vocational qualification or certificate in relevant engineering discipline
- Eligible for New Zealand Defence Force Security Clearance (Confidential & Secret)
- Eligible or working toward membership of a relevant technical body
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development
