Naval Architect

About the role

We are currently seeking a Naval architect to join our business. Reporting to a Senior Naval Architect, this role will provide Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering design solutions across most marine market sectors including superyachts, fishing vessels, ferries, workboats, tugs, barges as well as providing in-service support for the Royal New Zealand Navy and other projects for NZ Defence Force.  Projects may involve site visits to vessels and clients in the region and the role can be based either in our Devonport or Nelson offices. There will be opportunities to progress in the team and gain seniority as your skills develop.


Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Delivery of projects and output to clients by providing Naval Architecture design ensuring output is of a consistently high standard
  • Provide input into management of projects/outputs including following operational processes, engineering analysis reports and projection of resource requirements, budget, timescale and progress monitoring.
  • Maintain effective client relationships by liaising with clients’ technical staff, project managers and operational staff to ascertain full scope of tasks and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Provide support and mentoring to less experienced Team members.
  • Undertaking analysis and calculations in engineering areas which include structural, stability, systems.  Experience in using CAD tools such as Autocad, Inventor, Maxsurf, ANSYS , Rhino is highly desirable.


About you:

We are looking for someone who has a strong background in the marine industry, with good experience of practising Naval Architecture. You will have experience working in a multidisciplinary design office and will be familiar with working in a project-based environment, with experience in delivering projects on time, in budget and to specification. You will have a relevant degree and have over 2 years’ experience delivering marine design outputs and are proficient with standard applications, bespoke software and CAD packages. You will have comprehensive communication skills and sound analytical report writing skills. Knowledge and experience of NZ Defence support and a current membership with an associated engineering body/council is desirable.
