About the Role
We are seeking a motivated leader to drive our Safety Engineering Capability development across Australasia. In this role you will be reporting to the Systems Engineering Capability Manager, where you’ll have the opportunity to shape Babcock’s safety standards and processes, ensuring we meet our customers' and future program needs through expert guidance and technical leadership.

 

This role can be based at any location in Australia or New Zealand (with a preference for Adelaide or Melbourne) – and will require adhoc travel interstate (or regular travel to Adelaide if not based in SA)

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of Babcock Australasia’s System Safety, Safety Engineering, and Product Safety capabilities, ensuring robust processes and standards across our programs.
  • Oversee and maintain System Safety Program Plans and Hazard Logs, integrating the Hierarchy of Controls framework into our approach to risk management.
  • Implement and manage Safety Case Reports to ensure that products and services adhere to recognized safety standards, aligned with Babcock’s safety policies and regional regulations.
  • Provide support to project teams, developing Safety Engineering plans, identifying resources, and ensuring training to achieve program and project objectives.
  • Collaborate with program stakeholders and Engineering Capability Managers to advance Safety Engineering processes, align with the Babcock Global Engineering Standards, and ensure compliance with regional legislative requirements.
  • Apply expertise in Safety Engineering to develop safety analyses, guide hazard identification and risk assessment activities, and oversee hazard treatment and verification.
  • Lead and review technical risk assessments, provide safety guidance, and deliver high-quality technical documentation for knowledge capture.

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Significant technical or engineering experience (safety systems), ideally in Defence, Rail/ Transport, Utilities, Oil/Gas, Aviation or similar
  • Demonstrated expertise in safety engineering tools and techniques, such as Hazard Analysis (PHA, SRHA, SHA) and use of industry-standard tools like DOORS and BowTieXP
  • Deep understanding of MIL-STD-882E, DEF-STAN-00-056, DO-178B, and DO-178C standards - preferred
  • Proven communication skills, detail orientation, and the ability to guide engineering solutions
  • Accredited engineering degree (Washington Accord) and chartered status in a relevant engineering body

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must hold Australian Citizenship and be eligible to obtain and maintain an Commonwealth Personnel Security Clearance, as defined by AGSVA.
