About the role


The Asset Obsolescence and Supportability Lead is responsible for managing some aspects of supportability of the LHD Class Ships and Shore systems. The position is responsible for assessing supportability elements, determining root cause, establishing risk to asset capability and driving solutions to eliminate risk/issues or mitigation strategies to reduce risks. 

Additionally, the position is responsible for initiating and driving bespoke optimisation initiatives, contributing to optimised asset capability and reduced total cost of ownership. The role requires significant collaboration across the LHD program, particularly with Supply Support, and Engineering Change, as well as across other platforms regarding Obsolesces.


Responsibilities include:           


  • Assessing supportability elements, determining root cause, establishing risk to asset capability and driving solutions to eliminate risk/issues or mitigation strategies to reduce risks.  Activities include but are not limited to: obsolescence part analysis, coordination and optioneering, Repairable parts analysis and coordination, Common equipment analysis and standardised through life support approaches, condition monitoring program and Management of data sources to support Supportability decisions.
  • Work in a team environment and under limited supervision to lead and coordinate:
    • The development of robust systems engineering practices, processes, procedures, specifications and instructions in support of safe, transparent, effective and efficient Asset Management services;
    • Develop, Lead and manage the obsolescence management plan together with supply support and conduct: front-end system and sub-system appraisals and thorough hazard analyses to identify obsolescence, assess risks, prepare robust obsolescence risk management plans, project manage obsolescence solutions together with engineering change and project delivery , develop and lead an obsolescence IPT within ASCSPO as well as other platforms
    • Develop and manage a Repairable Parts Management Plan, with Supply Support, conduct analysis of all repairable parts, and monitor MTTF and MTTR of utilised repairable to measure success.
    • Conduct analysis of Common Equipment of all types across the platform and understand parts interchangeability and the potential impact on the parts holding requirements.
    • Determine certification, traceability, manufacturing, acceptance testing or other requirements such as Lloyds, of parts that have a demand with supply support.
    • Provide standardisation across common equipment for how they are managed, maintained, and condition assessed
    • Review recommendations from System Reviews and Maintenance Effectiveness Reviews, and conduct analysis to monitor benefits realised
    • Systems engineering analyses to improve reliability, maximise availability and optimise Total Cost of Ownership of systems by determining the optimum mix of preventative and corrective maintenance as well as engineering and/or configuration change;
    • The review of engineering plans, engineering specifications & design documents to verify and validate systems requirements and specifications and to ensure systems fulfil their intended purpose.
  • Provide leadership, direction, guidance, and mentorship to the Asset Optimisation team and junior staff;
  • Liaise with the Logistics Support Analysis Environment (LSAe) team to support the seamless implementation of the LSAe program;
  • Assist the Asset Performance and Optimisation Manager to evolve and improve the Asset Management capability and capacity within the LHD Asset Class Prime Contractor Support Contract; and
  • Actively contribute to and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.


About you


Essential requirements:


  • Engineering degree and/or relevant industry experience in an engineering role of more than 5 years;
  • Relevant industry experience in an Asset Lifecycle Engineering role or Reliability Engineering role or Condition Monitoring/Assessment role of more than 5 years;
  • Demonstrated experience in the support and/or development of Logistics Support and Analysis artefacts; and
  • Must either hold, or be eligible to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance




  • Working knowledge of the conduct of Front-End Logistic Support Analysis activities;
  • Working knowledge of Defence engineering, maintenance and financial policies and procedures; and
  • Eligibility for membership of the Asset Management Council.
