Purpose:

 

Lead a small to medium sized team of designers within the applicable technical discipline by ensuring the team has appropriate processes, practices, tools, capability, and capacity to consistently deliver acceptable quality products and services across the portfolio of work, within the planned schedule and budgetary constraints.

 

About this role:

 

This position is suited to a strong people manager that has significant experience in leading small to medium sized mechanical teams. The primary focus of the role is ensuring the MDDO Mechanical group is supported to successfully deliver projects to the required quality within the planned constraints. The role requires excellent knowledge of relevant design and drafting standards, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills. Expected to oversee the team in the diagnosis and resolution of complex design issues spanning multiple systems and provide leadership, advice, and guidance to others within their technical discipline. This position is responsible for resource allocation within their team and is expected to work with other department stakeholders to maintain appropriate staffing levels and build succession plans.

In this role, you will:

  • Ensure that safety is always the highest priority within the team and the products and services produced.
  • Responsible for the delivery of designs consistent with project requirements and constraints.
  • Direct line management of a team of technicians, technologists, and engineers.
  • Resource allocation and forecasting for the team.
  • Provide technical guidance and discipline specific subject matter expertise related to design, drafting and integration.
  • Develop training and career progression plans.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary projects within the MDDO, ensuring delivery to planned quality, cost, and schedule requirements.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current project status and communicate with a range of stakeholders as required by the project and broader organisation.
  • Prepare and keep records of estimates for multi-discipline projects.
  • Work collaboratively with the MDDO management team striving to develop, maintain, and continuously improve processes, tools, and guidance in the field of design, drafting and project delivery.
  • Work directly, and communicate effectively, with other project stakeholders, including project managers, configuration, engineering, and other departments to meet delivery targets.

The ideal candidate brings:

  • Ten (10) years of experience in Mechanical Drafting and Design.
  • Graduate degree or diploma of technology with a focus in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited organisation.
  • Eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Professional Engineer (PEng) or Applied Science Technologist (AScT) in British Columbia.
  • Significant relevant experience managing a team of technical personnel in a multi-disciplinary design environment.
  • The ability and aptitude to problem solve technical issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with 2D and 3D CAD software (knowledge in AutoCAD and SolidWorks an asset)
  • Submarine specific knowledge, such as the standards that control mechanical design elements of the Victoria Class submarines, considered an asset.
  • Experience in providing installation guidance instructions for Engineering Changes that ensures they can be procured, manufactured, implemented, and maintained.
  • Proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, meaning that you must have received the full series of a COVID-19 vaccine approved by the Government of Canada with the final dose at least 14 days prior to your start date
  • You are eligible for a Canadian Secret Security and ITAR Clearance
