Here at Babcock, our Marine Engineering & Systems (MES) business unit is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme as well as providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. Therefore, we are looking to grow our existing team, building on a well-established foundation of over 700 staff across the UK. 

 

The Type 31 Project will deliver 5 general purpose, global, adaptable and exportable frigates to the Royal Navy designed to undertake a range of operational tasks from maritime security, humanitarian aid and disaster relief and defence engagement to operation in a high threat environment. The Project is the pathfinder and cornerstone of the National Shipbuilding Strategy and will be delivered in an innovative manner at pace with all 5 ships to be in-service by Dec 2028.

 

Who we are looking for?

 

We are looking for a Quality Assurance Engineer with proven relevant experience in an engineering or defence related industry with specific emphasis on the Naval Construction Quality processes and standards. 
 
What will you be doing?

 

This is your opportunity to make a real impact as a Quality Assurance Engineer creating quality plans and conducting quality assurance audits as well as other duties. You will be working as a key player within the T31 Project and will have a high level of interaction with all of the wider community both at strategic and tactical levels e.g. Production, Engineering, Client, Lloyds Register, sub-contractors etc. This is essential to developing a sound basis for acceptance, completion and handover within a tight schedule and budget. 

 

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Be the point of contact for ALL Quality Assurance activities as allocated to him
  • Ensure the effective capability of the composite Quality Assurance team to meet operational requirements. Ensure the effective implementation of the QA systems
  • Ensure the effective Liaison with the other T31 stakeholders for implementing, maintaining and managing QA Ensure effective engagement from a QA perspective with the Block Build and Block Handovers 
  • Provide analysis and reports of performance related data supporting joint process improvement initiatives
  • Attend and present information at ship delivery senior management meetings and Quality forums
  • Manage and conduct the External Audit 3rd party audits for the supply chain. Conduct product verification audits and quality investigations on board ship as required
  • Be point of conduct for all QA on T31 for external Accreditation Authorities and the MOD Authority

 
The experience you will bring 

 

You will be qualified to a recognised trade standard and a relevant academic level. You will have proven relevant experience in an engineering or defence related industry with specific emphasis on the Naval Construction Quality processes and standards. Extensive experience in multi-disciplines within a manufacturing environment with both fabrication and structural experience, as well as, systems knowledge and experience.

 

You will have excellent knowledge of the QA requirements associated with the construction and acceptance of Naval Warships. The capability to assess the work carried out by Production and their subcontractors to assure the quality and the technical acceptability of the work presented. Also, the in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of QA and auditing. Lastly, you must hold, or have the ability to obtain, full SC clearance and ITAR.
