Purpose of role

  • Provide and functionally lead the Engineering and technical resources across the Nuclear Business Unit (NBU)
  • Responsible as the Design Authority for Nuclear facilities at Rosyth and the process for initial dismantling of the submarines.
  • Manage the Design Authority function throughout the NBU to discharge obligations required under the Nuclear Site Licence.
  • Ensure the Design and Configuration of Nuclear related systems and plant is fit for purpose and the systems / plant conform to the design intent throughout the design life.
  • Provide and approve design of engineering output within Nuclear Business unit in accordance with the requirements set by Projects, Operators and Nuclear Safety.

 

Top 5 Major Tasks and Activities

  1. Ensure that the design of systems / plant is such that it will perform its required function in a safe, efficient and economical manner throughout its design life
  2. Ensure that proposed design changes do not prejudice the fitness for purpose and safety of nuclear system / plant
  3. Provide and functionally lead the Engineering and technical resources across the Nuclear Business Unit (NBU)
  4. Ensure that a record of all documentation forming the reference design is maintained for the nuclear system / plant and for recording all reference design information
  5. Provision of design solutions to relevant codes ensuring optimal design solutions proposed

 

Additional Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure that Operating and Maintenance Authorities hold controlled copies of the reference design documents relevant to operation and maintenance.
  • Sit as a core member and provide guidance on matters concerning design management at the Nuclear Safety Committee.

 

Key Outputs/Deliverables Business Unit

  • Provision of design solutions within agreed project timescales to appropriate Codes of Practice / Standards
  • Provision of professional design engineering support to Submarine Dismantling Project
  • Acceptance of design from external design and engineering groups

 

Describe with whom the role regularly interfaces

  • Relevant Authorisation Groups and PAG / NSAG; Client; Direct reports engineers and designers; Regulators (ONR); External Engineering Consultancies; Contracts and Procurement; Production; Safety Case Management Organisation; Project Group; Programme Group Design Team

  • Compliance with regulation and standards for design
  • Provision of Design Substantiation to Nuclear Safety requirements for CAT 2 infrastructure

Company/Industry Knowledge

  • Understand design / intent of nuclear systems / plant
  • Understand / knowledge of Nuclear Safety Cases and site licence
  • Recognition of current Legislation, Standards and Codes of Practice for Nuclear works
  • Knowledge of relevant departmental procedures that detail the design process
  • 10 years experience in a design management role
  • At least 5 years experience of working in a nuclear environment.

 

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified – relevant engineering degree
  • Chartered Engineer

 

The salary for this role is dependant on experience.
