About the Role

Here at Babcock International Group in Rosyth, we are currently looking for a Head of Health Physics & Radioactive Waste to join us. We aim to deliver engineering-led and world-leading products and services across our Engineering, Specialised Manufacturing, Gas Handling Systems and Naval Marine business streams.

You will be part of the Nuclear Business Unit senior management team with responsibility for Radiological Protection and Radioactive Waste Management

You will set departmental strategy with respect to compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR), the Radioactive Material Transport Regulations, the Environmental Impact Assessment (Decommissioning Reactors), the permits granted under the Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018 (EASR18) and the ONR site license conditions.       

You will manage and integrate the Radiological Protection and Radioactive Waste Management teams providing independent advice and guidance to all functions within the Nuclear Business Unit regarding adherence to regulatory requirements and implementation of best practice whilst optimising achievement of production output.

Key Outputs/Deliverables

  • Building and taking ownership of a new integrated Professional Health Physics and Radioactive Waste Management organisation to support the Nuclear Business Unit activities.
  • The ownership of the company’s management arrangements for radiation safety, radioactive waste management and environmental monitoring, and for ensuring business unit activities are in compliance with these and latest best practice.
  • The provision of professional radiological protection advice to the company on radiation safety-related operations (as the Head of Function managing the appointed Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) under IRR).
  • The provision of professional advice to the company on radioactive waste management operations and environmental monitoring (as the Head of Function managing the appointed Radioactive Waste Adviser under the EASR18).
  • The provision of professional advice to the company on the transport of radioactive materials.
  • Ensuring the provision of reports and returns to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) as required by the conditions in the Radioactive Waste Disposal Permit, and to act as the formal point of contact with SEPA.
  • Managing the professional Health Physics team resource to ensure support is provided to the Operations, Design and Nuclear Safety, Project and Internal Assurance functions.
  • Managing the Radioactive Waste Management team in all aspects of waste disposal including interfaces with approved recyclers and waste organisations the conditions and limitations of applicable legislation.
  • Assess existing company arrangements for Radiological Protection and Radioactive waste management and, engaging with national bodies and other licensee organisations benchmark against best practice within the industry taking a proportional view in line with site risk and requirements.

 

What do I need to do the role?

Qualifications:

 Degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline, and membership of the Society for Radiological Protection.

  • Certified Radiological Protection Advisor (RPA) or working toward appointment.
  • Certified Radiological Waste Advisor (RWA) or working toward appointment.
  • Nuclear Radiological Protection Course (NRPC). Desirable
  • Nuclear Emergency Procedures Course (NEPC). Desirable
  • Health Physicists Nuclear Accident Response Course (HPNARC). Desirable

Key Technical Skills

  • Relevant recent experience in the nuclear regulatory field
  • Relevant experience in the environmental regulation field
  • Extensive experience of implementing, advising, or regulating Radiological Protection & Waste Management arrangements;
  • Experience in nuclear licensed site operation, maintenance, safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Previous experience of managing internal process inspection programmes within external auditor expectations

Company/Industry Knowledge:

  • Proven experience operating in a senior management position with responsibility for Radiological Protection.
  • Proven experience operating in a senior management position with responsibility for radiological waste management
  • To have operated in a senior position in a highly regulated industry
  • Knowledge and experience of the international and national codes, standards and specifications pertaining to the scope of work.
  • Health Physics background essential but Radioactive Waste Management background with Health Physics experience will be considered.

 

What else do I need to know?

The post will be based in an evironment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. You must be a sole UK national and hold, or be eligible to obtain 'Security Check' (SC) or 'Develped Vetting (DV) security clearance.
