Overall Department Direction


Defence Systems Technology (DST) is a business unit within the Marine and Technology Division of Babcock International. DST supports a wide range of exciting design, manufacture and Equipment support projects, and works with a number of key customers both domestically and internationally. The business continues to win new work and grow at a significant rate and, as a result we are currently recruiting for a talented, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Commercial Team.  DST currently operates over several locations, predominantly in Devonport, Bristol and Leicester. 


This role is within the Commercial Team which is based in Devonport Royal Dockyard, however also supporting Bristol based contracts.  This Team supports a wide range of contracts as well as tendering activities.  The current contracting mechanisms being executed are Contracting For Availability (CFA) through to enabling type arrangements  

Main purpose of role


  • To secure work with acceptable terms by supervising and undertaking the preparation of commercial elements for tenders, tasking forms, and Contract Amendments (as may be applicable) together with negotiation of Prime Contracts.
  • Liaison with project teams and provision of commercial advice with regard to Prime and where necessary Subcontract issues and reporting during Contract execution.
  • To provide and maintain the commercial point of contact to the Customer(s) together with the provision of commercial representation at Customer progress meetings.

Key Skills and Knowledge


Knowledge of MoD Terms and Conditions and commercial based contractual Terms & Conditions, the ability to analyse Terms and Conditions and write appropriate qualifications, ability to make decisions within limits of Authority.  Use of initiative and ability to work with no supervision.  Good communication, presentation and negotiation skills.

Significant experience in contract administration, negotiation and management including relevant  experience of proposal preparation.  Literate in IT applications (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook)




Education of HNC standard, preferably in engineering, business, or legal studies, IACCM, MCIPS or an equivalent qualification




Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment.

The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.




This position is within the Defence Systems Technology business unit as a grade 6 which has a salary of £40,545 with DRDL Terms and Conditions.

This role is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard which is located in the vibrant city of Plymouth, Devon in the south west of England. Business Area- Devonport


Babcock International Group owns and operates the main refit, maintenance and workshop area of the 330 acre naval site at Devonport, known as Devonport Royal Dockyard, where it employs thousands of people. The remainder of the site at Devonport is owned by the Ministry of Defence and is known as Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Devonport – one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe.


Babcock and the Ministry of Defence work in partnership to operate and maintain this co-located site by providing through-life support for submarines, surface ships and associated systems and equipment.
