About the role

The Chemistry and reactor chemistry departments supply scientific support services to all departments and vessels within HMNB Devonport and on occasion to external customers.

This role is full time and will involve working as part of a small team and include shift work.

The successful applicant will increase the ability of the section to respond to the customers’ needs and allow us to maintain the high standards required in a UKAS accredited laboratory.

Main Purpose of Role

The key tasks of the role include but are not limited to various chemical and radio-chemical classical and instrumental analytical techniques, safety critical testing of atmospheres for work in confined spaces and supplying a calibration service.

Whilst the primary requirement is for shift working in the reactor chemistry section the successful candidate will be expected to, on occasion, be stationed at the Laboratory in Granby yard which is predominately day work Monday to Friday

What do I need to do the role?

It is desirable for applicants to have experience in a UKAS laboratory and working afloat. However all necessary training will be supplied.

Most important is the willingness to learn new skills, work with minimal supervision and have an attention to detail.

The successful applicant will have to be prepared to work a 24 / 7 shift pattern when required and in radiological controlled areas.

Qualifications

Degree, HNC or equivalent.

Or

Considerable experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory and academic or vocational qualification in an appropriate scientific subject.
