About the role
Here at Babcock International we’re looking for an Submarine Defuel Delivery (SDDP) Project Manager to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

A new ‘Major Infrastructure Projects’ (MIP) Business Unit is driving the Infrastructure development to support the future needs of our customers. One of our key scope elements is re-establishing a defuel capability for out of service submarines, comprising of a number of interrelated projects, one of which is the SDDP. The scope of the project comprises of the provision of: a 14 Dock Reactor Access House a suite of defuelling tools & equipment, a Test & Training Rig, dockside HVAC and services and a safety justification for the facilities’ use.

As the SDDP Project Manager you'll manage a team of Package Managers and Project Engineers to ensure that the remainder of the scope is delivered, where possible, in support of the MoD completion aspiration. You'll monitor, forecast and report against the baseline schedule and estimate; provide a significant contribution to the development and upkeep of a project risk and opportunity plan; manage risk mitigation activities in support of project delivery. You'll also oversee and manage Subcontract placement and ongoing provision of goods and services and ensure that the project is managed and delivered in a safe and appropriate manner.


What do I need to be able to do the role?
You'll be educated to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline, or hold HNC/ONC with significant, relevant Project Management experience. Ideally you'll hold, or be working towards, an APM qualification.

We would also like you to have the following:

  • Demonstrable experience and knowledge of engineering works, e.g. civil works, mechanical handling, mechanical or electrical systems / services in nuclear or conventional environment.
  • Proven experience with managing teams to successful outcomes.
  • Experience of managing significant multi-million pound budgets

Lastly, you’ll be an experienced Project Manager who is able to demonstrate considerable experience in managing staff and subcontracts.  You’ll have good interpersonal skills and be competent in verbal and written communication and the ability to operate and interface effectively with Senior Managers, internal and external stakeholders.
