The Principal NDT Engineer role is based within our Devonport Royal Dockyard business area.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

The role


The difference our new Principal NDT Engineer will make
As a Principal NDT Engineer you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You will be key in leading the management of Babcock’s NDT supply-chain for compliance and providing expert NDT advice to both in-house Babcock stakeholders and external customers.


Day to day, you’ll lead the management of Babcock’s NDT supply-chain for compliance, managing a team between 3-5 personnel. Creating, reviewing, and approving NDT Procedures and Written Instructions whilst also developing and validating new NDT techniques as well as supporting R&D initiatives.

Essential experience

•    We need you to have multiple PCN (ISO 9712 accredited) Level 3 NDT qualifications. As a minimum you will hold at least three different PCN Level 3 methods, one of which must be in a volumetric method e.g. UT, PAUT, ToFD or RT and one of them must be in a surface-flaw method e.g. PT, MT or ET
•    For each certificated Level 3 method you hold, you will have significant experience in the application of Level 3 duties
•    You will need to have multiple PCN (ISO 9712 accredited) Level 2 NDT qualifications covering both surface-flaw and volumetric methods/product sectors, which are not covered by your Level 3 qualifications.
•    You will be highly skilled and experienced in physically undertaking a multitude of NDT inspections both surface-flaw and volumetric methods/product sectors following British Standards and preferably Defence Standards.
•    You will need to satisfy security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
•    You must be a British National and be capable of holding NNPI, PSA and Atomic security clearances.
