About the Role
Here at Babcock International we’re looking for a Principal Design Manager to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.


Babcock Strategic Infrastructure (Estates Project Department) provide maintenance to the Dockyard infrastructure, to enable Babcock to maintain the Navy fleet. A significant, recent commitment to invest in site improvement necessitates expansion of the existing core team to accommodate delivery.


As a Principal Design Manager for CDM regulations you’ll utilise your significant experience of project management functions and the delivery of infrastructure projects to deliver the following outputs for all ongoing Projects. You’ll co-ordinate H&S aspects of design work whilst liaising with others involved in the project; you’ll foster and facilitate good communications between Client, Designers and Contractors and advise and assist said parties with their ongoing functions within the project. You’ll also prepare Pre-Construction information, as well as prepare/update the H&S File to relate to any Operational and Maintenance information prepared for a project and hand over to the Client representative.


What do I need to be able to do the role?

You’ll be educated to degree level, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline and hold membership of the Association of Project Safety (APS) as well as the Register of CDM Principal Designers (IMAPs) buildings, workshops, services, plant rooms, civils and groundworks.  Significant, time-served experience of delivering small, medium, and large projects is essential for this post, as is a good understanding of ‘end-user’ and maintenance requirements.


We would also like you to have the following:
• Asbestos Awareness Course
• NEBOSH Construction Certificate
• Working from Height Training
• Confined Spaces Training
• A good working knowledge of 2015 CDM regulations (this may be wavered for a period depending level of experience and specific capabilit.)


Lastly, you’ll need strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with both internal and external senior stake holders.


What else do I need to know?
The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to acquire, national Security Clearance at the appropriate level for this post.
