Job Title: Metallurgist (6 Month FTC)
SF29344
Location: Devonport, Plymouth
Business Unit: Engineering Services

Overall Department Direction
Engineering Services is the professional body that provides integrated technical functions to enable the business to efficiently deliver through life support for both current and future complex assets in Warships, Nuclear Submarines and Deep Maintenance Facilities, in a high hazard and highly regulated environment.

We provide engineering risk-based decision-making and believe that Ships, Submarines and Facilities should be designed to be safe to operate, cost effective and available.

Main Purpose of Role
Based at Devonport within the Engineering Services business and reporting to the Chief Engineer Materials, the role of Metallurgist has several main facets:-

Perform a whole range of metallurgical testing to methods – tensile, hardness, impact, welder approval.
Maintain standard required of a UKAS lab.

Participate in the investigation of service failures and present test results for consideration by senior staff.

Assist in the provision of technical advice on the selection, fabrication and treatment of metallic materials used in marine engineering, in consultation with more senior staff.

Perform Quality Assurance checks for incoming material and components.

Carry out contract review of customer requests for routine testing work.

The role thereby supports the delivery of two key Nuclear Sector objectives, to grow our UK submarine business as the trusted partner to the Submarine Delivery Agency and continue to develop improved in-service and long-term sustainment in support of entire submarine fleet.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences
Full training will be available to perform the roles, but any experience will be of significant benefit.

It would be useful but not essential to have submarine platform systems and structure knowledge, with a familiarity working with MoD practices, from either a Dockyard, MoD or Naval operating background.

A strong technical and practical knowledge of submarine operational and repair requirements is required in order to provide sound judgement when necessary.

A wider understanding of the Safety, Certification and Quality Assurance requirements for Submarine Platforms, Warships and Nuclear Facilities would be valuable, as would a knowledge of the organisation and operation of MoD, RN and other enterprise organisations.

Good written communication skills and practical ability are equally important.

Qualifications
The post holder must be qualified with a degree (BEng or BSc) in Materials Science/Engineering or a related subject covering materials.

The post holder should be seeking Professional Registration with the UK Engineering Council at IEng or CEng level via an appropriate Engineering Institution; membership of a relevant recognised professional institution is desirable.

Grade
This position is within the Engineering Services business unit as a Grade 4 which comes with a salary range of £32,450 - £36,380 with DRDL Terms and Conditions.

Babcock offers a supportive environment including: enhanced employment terms and conditions, money purchase pension scheme with life assurance, share ownership scheme, Occupational Health services, flexible working hours (only non-industrials), career opportunities and specialist advice and guidance from our Learning & Development teams. Additional benefits may also apply for Management posts.
