Principal System Engineer - Mechanical Handling
SF31085
Location: Devonport, Plymouth
Starting Salary - £49,640 - £55,600

About the Role
We're looking for a Mechanical Handling Principal System Engineer to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

A significant programme of infrastructure investment is required on the Devonport site to meet the needs of the future MOD ship and submarine programmes. A new ‘Major Infrastructure Projects’ (MIP) Business Unit has been established to design, build and commission docking and berthing facilities for Astute Class submarine maintenance activities.

There are a number of Project Delivery and Design Authority roles positions available within the programme which will focus on the design of the maintenance facilities and systems. These roles require the capability to lead and undertake design in the mechanical handling discipline, understand the design intent of the mechanical handling systems, understand how the design intent is met, and obtain the required knowledge to maintain the design intent.

As a Mechanical Handling Principal System Engineer you’ll lead the planning and execution of design activities from a mechanical handling discipline perspective; provide mechanical handling expertise within the Major Infrastructure Projects (MIP) Design Authority; oversee mechanical handling system design development, definition of system requirements and system configuration management.

What do I need to be able to do the role?
You’ll be degree qualified in an appropriate mechanical engineering discipline and be a Chartered Professional or equivalent.  Extensive experience in design development and implementation is essential.

You will also have the following:

  • Detailed knowledge of codes and standards
  • Experience of the review of nuclear safety related documentation (claims, arguments, evidence) or transferable experience from other highly regulated industries will be considered.
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant engineering computer applications associated with mechanical engineering
  • Understanding or appreciation of configuration management
  • Understanding of systems engineering application as relevant to mechanical handling discipline

Lastly, you’ll have strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to interface effectively with internal and external stakeholders and sub-contractors.

What else do I need to know?
The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.

Babcock offers a supportive environment including: enhanced employment terms and conditions, money purchase pension scheme with life assurance, share ownership scheme, Occupational Health services, flexible working hours (only non-industrials), career opportunities and specialist advice and guidance from our Learning & Development teams. Additional benefits may also apply for Management posts.

We are happy to talk about flexible working.  Please ask about alternative patterns of work at interview.
