About the role

Here at Babcock International we’re looking to recruit a Health Physicist (Radioactive Waste Management).


The Health Physicist (RWM) role will be within the Radioactive Waste Management Section (RWM) and comprises of the Plant Manager Radioactive Waste, Principal Health Physicist (RWM) and Senior Health Physicist (RWM). The section is set up to deal primarily with Radioactive Waste Management processes and disposals of radioactive waste generated within Devonport Royal Dockyard Limited (DRDL).


Reporting to the Senior Health Physicist (Radioactive Waste Management), you will be responsible for managing Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) processes and disposals to meet varying requirements of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR), The Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 and the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2019. The role is also key in providing advice to various stakeholders and to support operational demands to ensure project delivery.


Main Purpose of Role:

  1. Provide professional Health Physics and Radiation Protection advice, direction and support to managers, employees, contractors and others.
  2. Manage and oversee Health Physics and Radiation Protection tasks in accordance with current legislation and company policy, tasking includes:
    • Processing, storage and disposal of radioactive waste
    • Consignment of radioactive material
    • Portable and installed radiation and contamination monitoring equipment
    • Preparation of radiological safety related documentation


What do I need to do the role?

You’ll need Health Physicist or equivalent operational experience, relevant knowledge and experience of radioactive waste management processes and techniques and be proficient use in Microsoft office software.


This role is developmental and may require some qualifications to be gained whilst in role. This includes the undertaking of a Radiological Protection based degree (if not already held) in which case a waiver will be applied and the responsibilities of the role adjusted accordingly whilst the incumbent acquires the relevant qualification.

What else do I need to know?

  • The post will be based in an environment which involves working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. You must be a sole UK national and hold, or be capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) security clearance and NNPPI.
