About the Role.
Here at Babcock International we’re looking for six new Functional Estimators to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security. As a Functional Estimator you’ll produce multi-disciplined Labour estimates in support of the Submarine Business Unit Tenders and provision of estimating support to operational departments during execution of work.

Using your working technical knowledge of Submarine systems, processes and all trade specialisations you will work within the team responsible for the production of multi-disciplined Labour estimates from Work Specification, Drawings and Site visits, for Submarine Bids and for Extra, Additional and Emergent work during the Project Execution Phase. Estimating activities will include the production of multi – trade man hour estimates for labour using knowledge, experience, BR’s, technical drawings etc. to ensure that the estimate is correct and properly qualified. You’ll consult with the production/commercial group to explain the basis of the estimate for original scope, enabling a greater capture of Variation Orders in the bid. You’ll ensure that the bid is consistent with previous bids and provide advice on work scope and estimating issues arising during the bidding phase. You’ll also provide support on reviewing cost control data with the finance department, production and Project managers in order to improve future estimates, capture Variation Orders and assist production when forecasting manning requirements.

What do I need to do the role?
You'll be educated to ONC level in a relevant discipline and have substantial relevant engineering experience. Preferably a time served apprentice with experience of working on Submarines; a time served Submariner;  or have demonstrable evidence of having worked in a relevant project/estimating capacity with knowledge of work measurement, estimating and costing systems.

We would also like you to have the following:

  • Must be able to formulate costs and relate these to actual events across trade specialisations.
  • Computer literate especially with regards Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • The ability to interpret written engineering specifications and technical drawings.
  • Excellent problem solving ability.

Lastly, you’ll need strong interpersonal and communication skills and be a flexible team player - enthusiastic, interested, and willing to help others and share knowledge.

What else do I need to know?
The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to acquire, Security Clearance at the appropriate level for this post.
