About the role

We’re looking for a Facilities Technical Author to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.


As a Facility Technical Author you will be tasked to research and produce, detailed control documentation which sequences and instructs Production / Project Departments in operations that support Nuclear Facilities and the associated activities that take place within them i.e. maintenance of equipment, replacement of obsolescent equipment, testing of equipment, installation of equipment, operation of equipment etc.


 The Facility operations and maintenance team operate and maintain facilities to support all key submarine Stakeholders. The team provide safe equipment and services utilising a number of resources and assets.

 

Main Purpose of Role

You will ensure that strict mandatory / contractual and legislative standards of nuclear safety and conventional health and safety are maintained when producing technical documentation, applying principles of ALARP throughout the drafting process. Whilst producing documentation you will perform quality checking to your own work and the work of your peers.


You will provide advice and guidance to Project/Production departments to support with costing and planning analysis for on-going work programming. As well as liaising with other departments as necessary to provide technical input/receive technical information.

 

What do I need to do the role?

You will need the ability to understand and interpret a variety of technical documents and drawings along with the ability to use a variety of sources of information to extract necessary and important data to populate procedures and operational documentation. 

 

Experience working in a regulated environment and of working in industrial areas and the associated hazards is also essential.

The following knowledge would also be an advantage, but can be gained in post:
• Technical operations relating to nuclear/radiological activities
• Maintenance of facilities and equipment to support industrial activities both nuclear and non-nuclear
• Heavy industrial operations on regulated/licenced sites
• Nuclear steam raising plant operation and refitting
• Nuclear procedures

 

Qualifications

One or more of the following qualifications are required:
• HNC in relevant discipline or equivalent would be beneficial
• BTEC Level 3 in relevant discipline (or equivalent) would be beneficial
• A Recognised Apprenticeship in relevant discipline (STEM subjects)

This role is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard which is located in the vibrant city of Plymouth, Devon in the south west of England. Plymouth is a city with a long and proud military history and more than its fair share of heritage.
