About the Role
Here at Babcock International we’re looking for a Design Manager to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.


Babcock Strategic Infrastructure (Estates Project Department) provide maintenance to the Dockyard infrastructure, to enable Babcock to maintain the Navy fleet. A significant, recent commitment to invest in site improvement necessitates expansion of the existing core team to accommodate delivery.


The Estates Project Department is responsible for delivering extensive and diverse infrastructure upgrades and improvements across the entire Devonport Site and often beyond. As a Design Manager you’ll utilise your  experience of Design management functions and the delivery of infrastructure projects to deliver the following outputs for all ongoing Projects. You’ll co-ordinate with the Principal design for CDM to ensure designs comply with regulations; you’ll foster and facilitate good communications between Client, Designers and Contractors and advise and assist the Client to resolve Design issues. You’ll manage the completion of Design Project outputs inline with the require programme dates and Chair design reviews for completed works to ensure the Project brief has been met.

What do I need to be able to do the role?

You’ll be educated to degree level, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline and hold Chartered Engineer status and are member of a relevant association.  .Significant, relevant experience of delivering small, medium, and large projects is essential for this post, as is a good understanding of ‘end-user’ and maintenance requirements.


We would also like you to have a good working knowledge of the 2015 CDM regulations (this may be wavered for a period depending on level of experience and specific capability.)


Lastly, you’ll need strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with both Babcock and MoD senior stake holders.

What else do I need to know?
The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to acquire, national Security Clearance at the appropriate level for this post.
