About the role


Energy & Marine (E&M) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. E&M Engineering is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. We have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.


The Division is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme, as well as, providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. Also, with ongoing additional framework agreements, infrastructure projects, export markets and research & development projects. Therefore, we are looking to grow our existing team, building on a well-established foundation of over 700 staff across the UK. The Department offers a friendly, flexible working environment, with further opportunities for development and progression within the Company.


As a Naval Architect, you will work within the team that supports a wide range of platforms in and around the Devonport site. This includes Surface Ships, Submarines, Floating Assets and infrastructure upgrades. The role involves supporting dockings, undocking’s, weight management, incline experiments, concept design work and stability assessments. 


You will be required to produce AutoCAD drawings, write technical documents, carryout basic stability calculations, attend meetings and liaise with our customers, both internal and external. You will gain an understanding of procedures, codes and standards and how they are applied to technical activities. You will update knowledge in relevant technical areas and develop skills and capabilities to enable effective delivery of tasks. In addition, assist more Senior Engineers in a range of activities.

What do I need to do the role?
You will hold a HNC qualification, or above, in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering or STEM with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered. Ideally, you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold or working towards Incorporated or Chartered status.


You will need demonstrable experience in AutoCAD 2D to be considered and experience with 3D is beneficial. You will have knowledge / understanding of docking / undocking / weight management processes. Knowledge of design packages e.g. ship stability, 2D & 3D AutoCAD is desirable. In addition, you must have appropriate IT, written and verbal communication skills


What else do I need to know?
You will work 36 hours per week Monday to Friday with flexible working and you must be able to achieve the appropriate level of Security Clearance. This role will be based at Devonport Royal Dockyard, but occasionally may have to visit other Babcock sites.
