Babcock Submarine Support Engineering’s (SSE) mission is to deliver submarine programme and engineering excellence through enterprise collaboration, innovation and analytics. Within Babcock SSE, the Constructive Group support the Royal Navy Submarine Fleet through the Seamanship and Outfitting, Structures, Naval Architecture, and Design Change disciplines.

 

Who we are looking for?

 

As a Constructive Engineer you will be responsible for developing engineering solutions across a wide range of tasks in support of UK Royal Navy Submarines, from through life design change and capability upgrade, to In-service defect investigations and life extension studies.

 

The role is within our Seamanship & Outfitting technical function who cover a broad range of systems across the entirety of the Submarine including the Propulsor, Rudder & Hydroplanes, Seamanship Equipment including Mooring, Anchoring, Towing, as well as Internal Outfit, Arrangement and Habitability.

 

You will work both individually and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams of engineers from across the Constructive Group and wider Babcock Submarine community. This role is highly rewarding with visible contributions to the defence capability of the UK, helping to keep the Royal Navy at sea and fighting fit.

 

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated people with a desire to be at the forefront of engineering excellence, to join a growing team of engineers within the Constructive Group. You will ideally have experience in an engineering or naval architecture discipline, but candidates from other industries with transferable skills and a desire to develop themselves are encouraged to apply. This role will suit candidates with a background in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths; those looking for a change in direction and with a strong desire to develop themselves, as well as those with existing experience within the defence engineering sector. 

 

Experience of submarines is not a requirement, as the right candidate will be given the support and means to learn within a fast paced and challenging engineering environment. 

 

What will you be doing?

 

As a Constructive Engineer within the Constructive Group you will:

  • Participate in a wide range of activities including feasibility & options studies, concept & detailed design. Conduct route cause analysis and platform surveys, as required to support delivery to in-service submarines and naval base facilities;
  • Provide support to the production of technical documentation, including reports, calculations and engineering drawings, to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with stakeholders;
  • Prepare and submit bid responses for technical work packages.

 

The experience you’ll bring 

 

The following attributes are considered highly desirable but not necessary if you are able demonstrate a willingness to learn:

  • Experience of working in a dynamic engineering design consultancy;
  • Familiarity with engineering standards and assessment methods;
  • Experience in engineering software such as AutoCAD, Ansys, and MathCAD;
  • Experience of Royal Navy or maritime platform engineering.

 

You should also be able to demonstrate the following key attributes:

 

  • Degree qualified in a STEM discipline, although HND/HNC level qualification with experience in a relevant field will also be considered, with an aspiration to register as IEng/CEng in the future;
  • Effective project management, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise effectively and deliver in a complex environment;
  • An ability to positively influence and work collaboratively with all levels of an organisation;
  • Proactive approach with a strong capability for problem solving;
  • Proven track record of delivery reliability, productivity and quality;
  • A continuous improvement mentality.

The post will be based in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. You must be a sole UK national and be eligible for ‘Security Check’ (SC) or ‘Developed Vetting’ (DV) security clearance.
