The Engineering/Design Apprenticeships are based at Rosyth.
At the heart of our Marine sector is our 320-acre Rosyth facility, which is home to one of the largest waterside manufacturing and repair facilities in the UK. The facilities have been an iconic presence on the River Forth for more than 100 years and carry a name synonymous with engineering excellence. Our world-class assets and infrastructure support a diverse range of naval and commercial marine programmes as well as advanced manufacturing.
At Rosyth, you can expect to work on the design elements of the, build, maintenance and refit of UK Royal Navy and international naval vessels, including the Type 31 Frigate Programme, UK Submarine Dismantling Programme as well as various commercial marine projects.
Our wider engineering and marine services business encompass the through-life support of complex assets, marine engineering and platform design, advanced manufacturing, and the international application of intellectual property via our Gas Handling business, LGE.

Design Apprenticeship:
To gain through formal training and working experience the skills and knowledge required to operate successfully within a Designer functional role.
Assist experienced Designer team members in providing engineering designs including 3D modelling and 2D drawings required throughout the design cycle This will include conceptual and detailed design drawings, modelling, simple calculations, and technical solutions in the delivery of customer funded tasks and projects. Work will be directed and supervised by the relevant discipline Technical Lead or Senior/Principal Designer for the relevant task or project being undertaken.
There is an opportunity to specialise in one of our three key disciplines, which are: Structural Design, Mechanical Design and Electrical Design.
Key Result Areas
• Gain an understanding of procedures, codes, and standards and how they are applied to engineering and technical activities.
• Being able to demonstrate capability in the production of, drawings, models, simple calculations design base documentation and technical reports.
• Ensuring that procedures, codes, and standards are correctly identified and applied to engineering and technical activities.
• Proactive in driving own learning and development
Possible placements:
Our Design Apprentices will work at a variety of locations and projects across the site and may move around to gain experience in a variety of design activities across our Design Lifecycle.
During the early year/s of the apprenticeship time will be spent undertaking further education.
Qualifications you’ll get:
You will gain a NC in an appropriate Design Discipline which will align with our functional model. This is likely to be either in Structural, Mechanical or Electrical areas.
What you’ll need:
Five SQA National Qualifications needed:
Maths at National Level 5
English at National Level 5
Science or technical subject at National Level 5
Two others at National Level 4 or 5
The ability to gain SC clearance
