The NDT Engineer position is an exciting role at HMNB Clyde within an expanding Compliance Department focused on ensuring delivery of a conforming product to the Royal Navy’s submarine flotilla. You will be joining a team of 600 highly effective engineers within the Fleet Operations Directorate.
The role
As an NDT Engineer you'll have a highly prestigious position within our complex Fleet Time Support programme, responsible for conducting surveys to ensure work has been completed to the correct standards prior to nuclear submarine deployments.
Day-to-day you'll be responsible for collating and analysing survey reports, working with the Internal and external stakeholders to assure compliance with specific regulations and codes. You'll produce technical reports following your analysis of results, working with Project Teams to support sequencing of work packages, and supporting the management team in the collective endeavour to maintain and improve safety.
A special part of what we do in Clyde is the delivery of Radiography, you will be an active member of the Radiography Team working as a radiographer and developing your skills to deploy as a Radiation Protection Supervisor.

Skills and Experience of the NDT Engineer:
- Experience working with Non-Destructive Examination Techniques.
- Demonstrable understanding of Radiation Protection Principles.
- Understanding and communication of complex findings and concepts is paramount to the role, therefore strong verbal and written skills are required
- Ability to apply engineering and quality standards to all aspects of work.
- A desire to learn and develop, building on formal education and experience.
- Knowledge of marine and/or nuclear engineering systems and equipment.

Essential qualifications for the NDT Engineer:
- Minimum of 3 PCN Level II in: Visual, DPI, MPI, UT (3.1/3.2), Radiography
OR
- Minimum of 2 PCN Level II in: UT (3.1/3.2), Radiography
OR
- Level 3 Mechanical, Electrical, Constructive or Engineering qualification or equivalent (HNC, Degree or above)
OR
- Recognised Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent.
The successful candidate must be able to achieve the required security clearance level for this role.

The team are moving to a 24/7 working pattern with this role transitioning to a full-time position within a 3-shift pattern with an attractive Shift Disturbance Allowance on completion of an anticipated 6-months of mandatory training, depending on previous skills and experience.
Attractive Shift Pattern
Shifts are currently a 21-day rota with rest days between. Rota is working 3 days, then 4 then 2 as below:
- Day 1(Tue), 2 (Wed) & 3(Thu): 20:00 – 0815
- Day 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 rest days but can volunteer for overtime, subject to working time directive
- Day 11 (Fri), 12 (Sat), 13 (Sun) & 14 (Mon): 20:00 – 0815
- Day 15, 16, 17 & 18 rest days but can volunteer for overtime, subject to working time directive
- Day 19 (Sat) & 20 (Sun): 08:00 – 20:15
- Day 21 rest day
This pattern is subject to consultation as may be altered to meet the needs of the business and staff.
