About the role

We currently have an opportunity for a Commissioning Group Mechanical Test Engineer.

A Submarine Test Engineer is responsible for the successful performance of key Submarine Commissioning tasks. These tasks are complex in nature and start with the work period planning through to customer acceptance, which may involve Sea Trials. On a regular basis, the incumbent is expected to research, compile and execute test documentation as well as conducting fault diagnosis on system or equipment defects. Complexity in the role comes from the diverse amount of knowledge required to effectively perform this work, including knowledge of regulatory requirements, project interfaces, quality control, work scheduling, submarine system design and operation. Errors or misjudgements could result in the project being late against schedule or of a lesser quality. Significant errors could result in the unacceptable loss of company reputation.

  • Implementing the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, Dose Reduction Techniques and ALARP principles when conducting tests.
  • The inspection, testing, calibration and commissioning of submarine systems and equipment in accordance with MoD and Corporate Documentation.
  • Carrying out fault diagnosis and proposing corrective solutions.
  • Researching and compiling Test Documentation ensuring that the requirements of the Work Specification are understood and included; paying due regard to the relevant MoD Documentation, Corporate Documentation and associated Plant Safety Reports/Cases
  • Identifying and recording defects/deficiencies into the corporate recording system and ensuring that all emergent work is correctly recognised.
  • Supervising/directing and carrying out administration of Industrial staff, ensuring that they accurately record their bookings and that all rework is identified and recorded.
  • Maintaining a close working relationship with Ship Staff, Fleet Engineering and any associated sub-contractors in order that the application and achievement of required standards are met and can be demonstrated.
  • Maintaining a close working relationship with Project and Fleet Engineering teams to ensure that systems/equipment being presented for testing meet the required standards without the undue need for rework.
  • Ensuring that all activities conform to professional Engineering Standards, Quality Orders, Nuclear and Submarine Safety constraints.
  • The prevention of non-conformance within the section. Any non-conformance identified shall be reported, controlled and corrected in accordance with the relevant corporate procedure.
  • Monitoring and ensuring compliance with the application of equal opportunities policies.
  • Ability to work with and co-ordinate the activities of people; with attention and energy focused on co-Coordinating various activities to meet schedules and to completing projects within tight constraints.
  • Supporting the team and management when required to work unsociable hours at short notice.
  • Ensuring that subordinate team members conduct themselves in accordance with the company guidelines when required to carry out ‘off site’ working, both home and abroad.

What do I need to do the role?

  • Successful completion of an appropriate and recognised trade apprenticeship.
  • Minimum of HNC or equivalent in the relevant discipline.
