General Description of Job

 

Babcock operates a significant outsourced contract for the provision of education and training services to the Royal Navy. The training services comprise Naval technical and tactical training and education, delivered by Babcock instructors as well as training support (e.g. training planning, equipment support, routine maintenance and training design). The contract is entering an exciting new phase with renewed focus on training innovation, optimisation and collaborative working and this role will provide the leadership, management and drive to achieve successful delivery of all aspects of the contract in this new phase.

Reporting to the WE Phase 3 Training Delivery Manager, the Training Delivery Instructor has responsibility for  core instructional duties that comprise management, support and execution of the delivery of courses to facilitate learning and development for up to 16 students in both systems electrical and electronic principles and equipment. Currently, all legacy training is delivered through a blend of classroom theory and hands-on application.  Imminent development and change to the way students learn, known as Project Faraday initiative, aims to introduce more Activity Based Learning (ABL) supported by Computer Based Training (CBT) and Computer Aided Instruction (CAI).

Ideally theoretical knowledge and practical work-based experience of a selection of the Royal Naval electrical and electronic weapon systems is desirable.  Where professional knowledge is incomplete, training opportunities could potentially be provided to all selected candidates. In addition to the primary professional teaching role, secondary duties will include routine updating of course / module supporting documentation, support toTraining Design effort, Duty of Care over trainees during instruction, compliance with all the MoD and Company Security and H&S directives, and, willingness to embrace new teaching methods and enhance the learner experience.

The post holder will apply the Being Babcock principles in execution of day to day activities.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Primarily to facilitate training delivery of system engineering  principles and how they relate to the operation, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of Weapon Engineering Systems in accordance with the training plan and Babcock TQMS.  Typical disciplines include electronics, weapons, communications / information technology, radar, sonar, control and workshops skill of hand.
  • As necessary facilitate training delivery in other engineering principles as identified in accordance with the Training Delivery Plan and Babcock TQMS.
  • To assist in maintaining and updating training documentation in areas of expertise.
  • To assess student course work and provide feedback on performance
  • Responsibity for the duty of care of trainees whilst facilitating training
  • Ensure that all trainees meet the Training Objectives and associated conditions and standards
  • Ensure the introduction of new approaches and technologies in the delivery of modern learning solutions, supported by the Training Delivery Innovation and Improvement Lead.
  • Ensure the continued development of the facilitative, student-centred pedagogy and blended learning approach developed under Project Faraday
  • Ensure Company health, safety and environmental procedures are implemented and complied with at all times.
  • To carry out the duties of First Aider if required, having completed the necessary training
  • Support the improved utilisation of Training Delivery staff, through accurate availability forecasting, maximising use of existing staff agreements to ensure appropriate application of leave approval and provision of time for achievement of development activities
  • Embed TAFMIS as the core of resource planning and training management information

  • Flexibility against  a requirement for travel between RN/Babcock delivery sites within the UK as required

    Technical Experience & Qualifications
       

Essential                      

  • Professional level qualification (at least an HNC) within the engineering sector

  • Defence Train the Trainer Instructional Techniques course or equivalent (successful completion)
  • Previous instructional experience of engineering subjects (ideally within last 5 years)
  • ECDL or equivalent demonstrable proficiency in using IT (hardware/software) within the workplace 

 

Desirable

  • L4 Teaching and Learning qualification
  • Consolidated theoretical knowledge and understanding (within last 5 years) of RN RADAR and Communications equipment / systems.
  • Experience in developing engineering based training courses
  • Experience (within last 3 years) of CBT/CAI principles, concepts and usage

        

 

Sea Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Responsibilities

 

  • Ensure Company health, safety and environmental procedures are implemented and complied with at all times for all employees under your direction
  • Implement the Sea, Health and Safety Plan/Policies consistently for all areas under your remit
  • Establish and take ownership of Risk Assessments for your areas/ of responsibility
  • Ensure preventative and protective control measures are implemented and recorded in area of responsibility
  • Identify and communicate all identified local HSE training needs of staff within your areas of responsibility
  • Ensure robust Induction for Sea contractors/staff is established & maintained within your areas
  • Cooperate with all investigations when appropriate or as directed
  • Ensure any recommendations post investigation are carried out in a timely fashion in areas of responsibility.
