Devonport:
The Trainee Slinger Apprenticeship is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

Trainee Slinger (rigging and fleeting) Apprenticeship:  
Becoming a qualified slinger, you will develop the learn fundamental knowledge skills and behaviours required to become a fully functioning member of the lifting team on site. During the course, you will acquire all the required skills to carry out a variety of lifting operations within the Devonport site, from working with a variety of cranes to using portable equipment and rigging/fleeting within nuclear areas. You will be versed with all the current legislations and keep up to date with any legislative changes.

 

Possible placements: 
You will be required to spend 3/4 weeks away at our provider’s sites in Birmingham, carried out 1 week at a time. Accommodation and travel will be provided.
Apprentices will work at a variety of locations across the Devonport site and will move around to gain an insight into all the operations on site. There is no requirement to attend college, all training will be done onsite except for the above.

 

Qualifications you’ll get:


You will gain a variety of National qualifications, this includes:
NPORS N402
NPORS N104
NPORS N047
NPORS N046
Level 3 Engineering Construction Rigger Apprenticeship standard (including NVQ Level 3)

 

What you’ll need:  
5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4/C or above, including English, Maths and a Science or Technology based subject. 

Security clearance: Security Check (SC)
