The role
As a Chief Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. A significant programme of infrastructure investment is required on the Devonport site to meet the needs of the future MOD ship and submarine programmes. The Major Infrastructure Projects (MIP) Business Unit has been established to deliver a portfolio of facility development projects including the design, build and commission docking and berthing facilities for Astute Class submarine maintenance activities. 

 

Day-to-day, you’ll provide strategic leadership and direction to the office of the chief engineer, providing technical Assurance of MIP design and safety outputs.  

 

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the office of the chief engineer – supporting, mentoring Chief Engineers under your supervision.
  • To act as Chief Engineer for those scopes of work where MIP are the Transient Design Authority.
  • Oversee the verification and validation of the design intent
  • Provide technical assurance of MIP design and safety outputs via application of the Babcock/DRDL Technical Governance processes
  • Develop, maintain and provide support on compliance to relevant MIP projects and provide independent technical support and advice to the Design Authority

 

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements. 

 

Essential experience of the Chief Engineer

  • Understanding of submarine maintenance activities and the associated demands on maintenance facilities and submarine systems.
  • Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to major infrastructure project requirements.
  • Experience in UK Nuclear Industry Technical Governance and Design Authority functions.
  • Sound understanding of Nuclear Regulator guidance and expectations and prior oversight of the construction phase of Nuclear projects to ensure design compliance
  • Understanding of engineering and safety practice associated with relevant disciplines, an understanding of configuration management

 

Qualifications for the Chief Engineer

  • Degree in an appropriate engineering or technical discipline (or equivalent)
  • Ideally a Chartered professional, preferably Fellow

 

Nuclear (training can be provide where required):

 

Training (or demonstrable equivalent gained through training or experience)

 

  • Module 1 Nuclear Plant Foundation Course (NPFC)
  • Module 2 Nuclear Fundamentals Course (NFC)
  • Module 4 Nuclear Practitioner Course (NPC) 

 

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
