About the role


To deliver welder training to Metalsmiths of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

Undertake the technical administration of training including, but not limited to course reporting, material preparation and user equipment maintenance.


Main Tasks


•    Deliver welder training utilising MMA, MIG/MAG, FCAW, TIG and OA to military trainees aged 17 years and above
•    Visual and destructive testing of welds 
•    Course and trainee administration 
•    Support trainee specific learning difficulties (SPLD’s)
•    Assessment, invigilation and marking of practical, theoretical examinations and weekly progression tests
•    Delivery of remedial training and revision (during working hours as required)
•    Preparation of lesson plans, training aids and trainee supporting materials 
•    Regular review of course material and content to ensure it is current and evolves to support new equipment and technological advances
•    Ensure trainees develop through mentoring and coaching
•    Supervision of trainees and visitors to ensure full compliance with H&S and PPE requirements
•    Ensure risks are adequately identified, assessed and minimised 
•    Maintenance of training equipment and training aids
•    Assist the Equipment Support Department (ESD) for welding related repair and manufacturing tasks
•    Maintain a Continuous Personal Development (CPD) record in respect of new technologies, equipment, processes and teaching methods 
•    Participate with department visits 
•    Carry out any other tasks as directed by your Line Manager


What do I need to do the role?


Technical Experience and Qualifications


•    A welding related apprenticeship and/or qualification to a recognised Level 3
•    Supervisory experience
•    Minimum of 3 years’ experience working within a welding environment
•    Proficient in Microsoft Office and Outlook packages


•    Class 1 Metalsmith or Shipwright of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers or Royal Engineers welder/fabricator or Royal Navy or Royal Air Force welder 
•    Experience of coded welding
•    Experience of metal fabrication
•    Qualified and/or experienced in welding inspection, for example CSWIP 3.0
•    Coaching and mentoring experience 
•    A Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET), training is provided if not already held
•    Knowledge of a military environment and equipment
•    Knowledge of the REME trade Structure and operational requirements
•    DBS clearance

•    Skilled and proficient in multiple welding disciplines 
•    Ability to maintain credibility with key stakeholders at all levels including trainees, customers, external bodies and visitors 
•    Champions and supports all H&S initiatives and procedures
•    Keen to remain abreast of changes in trade related skills and technology based training  
•    Excellent problem solving, communications and interpersonal skills
•    Ability to coach and mentor trainees aged 17 years and above
