Marine Engineering & Systems
The TEMPEST & EMC/EMI Engineer role is based within Marine Engineering & Systems.
Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate and have secured contracts for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting exports of frigates the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers.

You will join a national team of over 800 engineers and designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.

As a TEMPEST & EMC/EMI Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Working on an exciting international project, the role will provide you with the opportunity to deliver complex electrical/electronic solutions within an exciting, interesting team environment. Each week will provide you with new challenges that will test your skills and knowledge.
Day-to-day, you’ll interact across all phases of the design lifecycle, so strong technical communication skills and a readiness to explain complex technical issues with brevity to an audience unfamiliar with the TEMPEST & EMC/EMI topic are necessary. You’ll produce TEMPEST & EMC/EMI requirements at all design levels.
TEMPEST & EMC/EMI Engineers need to present at design reviews to internal and external customers regarding TEMPEST & EMC/EMI issues. You will be responsible for designing ground systems, chassis and harness shielding, EMI filters, selecting and laying out interface circuitry for achieving compliance with EMC and TEMPEST standards.
You’ll be required to prepare and review test procedures, test reports, technical analyses, control plans, and participate in cross discipline design reviews/verification for all requirements. TEMPEST & EMC/EMI Engineers need to produce test procedures and participate in testing in accordance with governmental and non-governmental standards.

Essential experience
Qualifications:
- Qualified to degree level, or HNC/HND equivalent, coupled with significant experience in the relevant engineering discipline.
- Preferred. But not essential a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with a specialty in Electromagnetics, RF, or analogue circuitry is preferred.
- Ideally, you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g., RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold or working towards Chartered or Incorporated status or you will have significant demonstrable engineering experience and capable of registration with the Engineering Council at CEng level.
- Obtain or have the ability to obtain SC Clearance
Experience:
- TEMPEST & EMC/EMI experience
- Working knowledge of lab test equipment such as spectrum analysers, generators, amplifiers, and measurement antennas.
- Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to successfully allocate, tailor, and flow down system level EMC/EMI requirements into lower-level requirements.
- Ideal candidates can show extensive design experience with EMI filters, circuit layout and analysis for EMC/EMI, shielding, lightning protection, cable, and harnessing design.
- Candidates with working knowledge and experience in modelling and simulation of EMC/EMI using commercially available software is a plus.
- It would be beneficial if you have experience working on UK naval marine shipbuilding projects or defence related design experience, but this is not essential.
- Electrical & Electronics experience in other industries would be considered including Facilities, Oil & Gas and Aviation.
