The role
As a Project Management Discipline Lead, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Working within Mission Systems you will work alongside our Head of Project Management & Project Controls and our Project Controls Discipline Lead to reorganise our current Project Management & Project Control (PM&PC) Function through implementing complementary, but individually focused disciplines for both Project Management and Project Controls.
Mission Systems is an exciting business unit that offers a wide variety of cutting-edge programmes, covering several technical subjects, including complex weapon systems, state of the art communication systems and counter-drone technology.
Day to day, you’ll
• Supporting the Head of PM&PC through developing and leading the community of project management professional within Mission Systems, instilling a positive culture whereby everyone lives by the Babcock principles.
• Development of core project management competencies across the discipline, including personal and professional development, training, mentoring and coaching.
• Working with the Project Controls Discipline Lead to champion best practice across the wider PM&PC function, instilling standardisation and common use of frameworks.
• Working with the PM&PC function Operations Lead to generate a pipeline of suitably qualified and experienced project management professionals for Mission Systems.
• Supporting the Head of PM&PC to ensure Group PM policies are rolled out within Mission Systems and to embed the Group Project Management BMS framework, supporting any tailoring where necessary.
• Carry out independent Assurance and Governance to confirm consistent application of the Group PM framework and provide feedback and support on corrective actions, to ensure confidence in delivery.
• Collaborating with sub-discipline leads to ensure the supply of PM resources is balanced with the demand from our contracts and pipeline.
• Collaborating with Discipline Leads to agree resourcing decision prioritisation and solving day-to-day risks and issues.
• Collaborating with stakeholders from across Mission Systems (and wider) to identify and implement ways of working/delivery approaches that best support successful project delivery.
Essential experience of the Project Management Discipline Lead,
As a result, we are looking for a driven, experienced project management professional, with experience of working in a matrix structure, to implement and maintain a strong professional project management community, practice, and culture across our Mission Systems business.
• Comprehensive experience of leading delivery of Projects and Programmes for large and technically complex equipment/system contracts, preferably for commercial customers (both UK and international).
• Broad experience of Project Management techniques and approaches, including Agile, planning and scheduling, estimating, risk management, change management, cost forecasting and performance management etc.
• Experienced in establishing a Project Management Discipline within a large organisation, including capability/professional development, mentoring and coaching.
• Leadership within a matrix organisation.
• Well-rounded commercial and legal awareness.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to interact successfully at all levels.
• Domain knowledge in, and experience of, delivering Project and Production output for complex defence assets and systems to UK and International customers is desirable.
This role is a full time position at thirty seven hours per week and can be worked on a hybrid basis from our office at Ashton Vale, we are open to discussing flexible working patterns and what the onsite and offsite split looks like.
The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance level for this role.
