Marine Systems Engineer

We’re looking for a Marine Systems Engineer to join our Engineering team in Bristol to deliver advice, solve problems and maintain safety for Royal Naval Marine Engineers deployed around the globe.


An opportunity has arisen to join our engineering team who deliver technical advice and support to the Royal Navy, specifically the Type 45 destroyer and the Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) aircraft carrier. The successful candidate will be a strong problem solver and clear communicator who can interpret customer requirements, undertake a range of technical investigations and act as the focal point in addressing issues and risks associated with marine systems design intent.


The Senior Marine Systems Engineer role
In this role you will provide technical assistance in support of engineering demands from the T45 and QEC community, answering technical queries and suggesting solutions to shortcomings in design and documentation. The successful applicant will be able to:
•    Carry out technical investigations and analyses, including evaluation and selection of technical options, preparing reports with recommended courses of action as required by the MSSP Chief Engineers
•    Evaluate engineering technical issues and, through the application of systems engineering principles, make technical recommendations to the MSSP Chief Engineers through the provision of authoritative evidence that demonstrates that the system design intent has been achieved
•    Conduct impact assessments of proposed changes to maintenance, technical documentation and broader Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) functions of in-scope Marine Systems
•    Support design and safety reviews in order to identify technical and safety risks through the application of appropriate design and safety analysis
•    Provide support to the MSSP safety function for the management safety risks
•    Provide technical inputs into ad-hoc Technical Approval Forms (TAFs) covering services where MSSP Suitably Qualified Experienced Personnel (SQEP) capabilities have been totally exhausted
•    To liaise with all Technical Services functions to ensure that cross-system integration issues and safety aspects of technical tasks are addressed
•    Provide management information as required
•    Identify opportunities for improvements to the MSSP service and improvements to the marine systems design baseline
•    Comply with the Company safety rules and regulations or local procedures and any Company initiatives to improve safety
You will be working as part of a small, but highly effective team where the highest of standards will be expected from both a technical and behavioural perspective. The role reports to a Senior Marine Systems Engineer and you will be given responsibility for the management of your own technical work packages.

•    Experience of the engineering design, or support of, complex engineering systems or equipment, ideally Naval
•    A proven ability to work in a collaborative manner across a multi-disciplinary team and stakeholders.


Skills and attributes
•    A problem solver – Able to use a range of methods and tools to address a problem and arrive at an effective solution
•    Able to gather and interpret information from a wide range of sources to supplement and develop their knowledge
•    Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a positive approach to interactions with others

•    An understanding of system engineering concepts, including the system lifecycle and emergent properties
•    Familiarity with the policies and processes associated with Technical Governance and applying these as appropriate to meet specific requirements
•    The ability to generate  technical documentation that is compliant with standards/processes to a high quality in  line with project timescales
•    Knowledge of safety and environmental engineering, both legislative and safety, and engineering management processes
Education and qualifications

•    A minimum of an HNC in an engineering discipline, or equivalent experience
•    Experience of the engineering design or support of complex engineering systems or equipment, ideally Naval.
•    A proven ability to work in a collaborative manner across a multi-disciplinary team and stakeholders.
