Chief Engineer - Communication Systems

Here at Babcock International, Bristol we are seeking a Chief Engineer – Communications Systems to act at the SME on the engineering, delivery, quality and legislation of RF Communication Systems in the military / defence industries. This candidate will be South West based, and will have access to either our Bristol site or our Plymouth site.


Main Responsibilities
Governance of technical development activities and providing technical support to the Communications systems engineering functions, contributing to delivery of Communications systems contracts to time, quality and cost, achieving Customer satisfaction and internal targets.


Principal tasks and responsibilities:
• To provide Subject Matter Expertise and Governance of technical development activities and technical support to the Communications systems engineering functions.
• To contribute to the delivery of Communications systems contracts to time, quality and cost, achieving Customer satisfaction and internal targets.
• To provide engineering governance of all engineering activities conducted within the Critical Communications business.
• To act as the Design or Technical authority where delegated.
To be the Subject Matter Expert on Communications systems at relevant forums
• To facilitate improvements within Critical Communications business.
• To Coach and Mentor junior members of the team to ensure that skills required for the role are passed on to staff.
• To manage technical Risk.


Required Skills and Experience / Qualifications
Minimum academic and professional qualification and experience necessary for this post:
• Chartered Professional status in engineering (Ideal, not essential).
• Systems engineering experience preferably Communications related.
• Knowledge of Electrical /Electronic, Software and Mechanical disciplines
• Knowledge of DST Company systems and processes
• Knowledge of customer operations and objectives
• Sound commercial knowledge & experience
• Good communication and motivation skills


Technical Skills:
The post holder shall have experience within the follow areas:

• RF communication systems including VLF, HF and VHF
• Baseband analogue and digital communication systems
• Communication protocols;
• Computer networks (TCP/IP, DNS, NTP, SSO etc.)
• Software development
• Operating systems including Windows and Linux
• Requirements management
• Configuration management
• Circuit and System design, integration and test
• Digital Signal Processing
• Functional safety
• CE marking
• System security, Information Assurance and TEMPEST
• AR&M
• Military and Civil communication and environmental standards for Air, Land and Sea

Bristol is a vibrant city in south west England with a wide range of attractions, landmarks, events and shopping.  It has excellent transport links and is only 1.5 hours from London by train. You could also be based in Plymouth, or in the South West with reasonable access to both Bristol or Plymouth.


Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment.

The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services.  This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.
