Apprentice Welder - DSG Bovington

Role Purpose:

 

As a Babcock Defence Support Group (DSG) Technical Welding Apprentice you will work on a wide range of Military Land Equipment. The tasks are challenging and varied in an exciting environment producing work which ensures the armed forces have equipment they can depend on. We have a selection of specialist roles across the engineering disciplines; including Vehicle Mechanics, Armourers, Weapon Control Systems, Electronics and Welders.

 

As a Welding Apprentice you will be expected to achieve Level 3 Qualification in welding. The academic aspects of the apprenticeship will be delivered off-site in block (Residential) models or day release. The remainder of the time you will work from your selected home location but with the opportunity to work from other sites for short periods to broaden your experience.

 

All Apprentices will complete a mandatory one week residential outward bound training course.

 

 

Main Tasks

 

The Post Holder has Responsibility for

 

  • Attending college as required to complete full apprentice programme
  • Work towards and achieve a Level 3 Apprenticeship
  • Complete all required training both on and off site
  • Keep a detailed log of tasks undertaken
  • Working with your Technical Training Instructor & Apprentice Mentor, an apprentice will be responsible, under supervision, for:
    • Examination of welds/weld repairs.
    • Produce test pieces to the required level of weld coding site specific.
    • Able to demonstrate and carry out weld codings in MMA, MIG and TIG to the required level needed.
    • Understanding of technical engineering drawings and instructions
    • Replacement of components and units to a wide range of equipment
    • Identification and repair of faults in vehicles/hulls and associated equipment.
    • Implementation of fault finding and diagnostic testing/ thickness gauges.
    • Correct use of tools and equipment. (including workshop fitted machinery and power tools)
    • Routinely involves working in confined spaces and at height
  • Where required complete Level 2 Key Skills
  • Ensure Company health, safety and environmental procedures are implemented and complied with.
  • Ensure DSG workshop standards are implemented and complied with

 

Technical Experience and Qualifications

 

Desirable:

 

  • GCSE Level 4 (Minimum) Maths & English

 

Essential:

 

  • Able to demonstrate, through testing, an aptitude and understanding of mechanical or electrical components and engineering
  • Be capable of carrying out instructions accurately and methodically
  • Demonstrate ability to work in a team
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of IT
