About the role

 

Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate, and are pursuing opportunities for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting frigate exports, the engineering team is actively working on other complex shipbuilding programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers, alongside our established in service support contracts for UK and overseas customers.

You will join a national team of over 700 Engineers and Designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.

As a Senior Structural Designer you will develop and check a range of technical outputs, within discipline (including General Arrangements, Layouts, Profiles, Deck Plans, Midship Sections, etc.,), in accordance with company and regulatory standards.

 

You will advise and assist in selecting the correct methods and tools for tasks, provide technical assistance to designers and trainee designers within the team and contribute to the preparation/production of design outputs across the appropriate phases of the design lifecycle in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements.

 

In addition you will belong to the wider engineering capability group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.

 

What do I need for the role?

To undertake this role, you need to:
 
•    Have demonstrable experience in a maritime design environment.
•    Possess good CAD skills, written and verbal communication skills and a good understanding of technical risk management.
•    Develop close working relationships within the wider technical community including other design, safety and engineering teams.

Ideally, hold an HND/HNC level qualification in a relevant field, A time served apprenticeship of experience in the relevant field can also be considered. 
 

What else do I need to know?
 
•    You should hold or have the ability to obtain SC Clearance.
