Senior Mechanical Engineer

About the Team

The Design team delivers engineering change projects to the RNZN Fleet. These projects vary in size, complexity and type, you could be working on anything from replacing a piece of obsolete equipment to designing a world’s first modification which provides a ship with new capability.  You will be providing technical advice, investigation, and approving engineering output. You will be required to work in an office based environment, but with access to the RNZN Fleet within the shipyard. 

 

About the Role

Your primary responsibility will be approving a diverse range of mechanical designs and supporting more junior Engineers in their delivery. This would include the structural modification of a ships flight deck one day to completing shock calculations on a bracket mounting mission critical equipment the next. 

 

As the “gate keeper” for the department, you will ensure we are delivering the highest quality designs to the RNZN including:

 

  • Recommendations for technical decisions and advice based on proven engineering principles and evidence based analysis
  • Ensuring engineering solutions meet project requirements while being practical, robust, operable and supportable
  • Producing detailed design/production drawings and high quality investigations
  • Conducting reviews and engaging subject matter experts across the organisation to ensure projects have clearly defined, testable, and objective requirements
  • Approving engineering outputs
  • Providing feedback to assist less experienced engineers in their growth

 

About You

We are looking for an experienced engineer with broad design and project delivery experience, preferably within a marine engineering environment, or within a multi-disciplinary design office. This would ideally include the following:

 

  • Experience designing and/or making modifications to a range of complex systems
  • Mechanical CAD design expertise (Inventor preferred)
  • Experience reviewing technical engineering outputs and writing technical reports
  • Relevant Engineering degree
  • Chartered Professional Engineer Status (or ability to obtain within 6 months)

At Babcock our Centre of Engineering serve as the Design Authority for the Maritime Engineering Support Team (MEST) serving the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN).  As the Navy’s strategic maritime partner, we provide complete engineering, maintenance, repair and overhaul services to the entire fleet. We also undertake ship conversions, life extensions, retrofits and major repairs in dry-dock or in water for our customers.
