Assistant Production Manager (Mechanical Fitter)

About the role 

An exciting opportunity has arisen based in Devonport on the Navy Dockyard to fulfil and embed a new Assistant Production Manager role.  The role reports to one of four Production Managers and they will play a critical role in leading a production team to plan and deliver activities safely.

This position sits under the ‘mechanical’ trades specialisation and has been formed to meet the customers (NZ Defence Force) demand schedule, budget and quality expectations, with key responsibilities for the flowing:


  • Production Management:  Effective and safe delivery of production activities to time, budget and quality. Management of subcontractors to meet the capacity and capability demands.
  • Team Leadership: Manage individual performance across the team, promoting and encouraging professional development. Set and deliver team objectives in line with the company’s direction, while demonstrating leadership qualities across the wider business.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify, develop and lead improvement opportunities including coaching and developing change management competencies within the team
  • Health Safety & Environment:  Lead the delivery team in improving the Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) management system.  Plan & deliver production activities in line with HSEQ ‘best practice’.


About you 

You have a relevant engineering qualification along with previous experience in delivering in an industrial workshop environment. You will understand budget management and schedules and will have a proven track record of managing an industrial site safely. You are an inherent team leader, effective communicator and coach with solid MS Office skills. If you have worked in a marine environment previously, this would be highly advantageous but not essential.
