We currently have an opportunity for an Engineer, working within Defence Systems Technology (DST), based at Ashton, Bristol.


DST is a business unit within the Marine Sector of Babcock International Group. Working on a range of exciting design, manufacture and support projects, DST works with a number of key clients domestically and internationally. We’re based at a number of sites in the UK and overseas.  The business continues to win new work and grow at a significant pace, as a result we are recruiting for talented, enthusiastic and driven people.


Main Purpose of the Role


To lead the development of mechanical systems within a multi-disciplinary project team, taking responsibility for the detailed technical design solution, requirements adherence, and delivery to budgeted programme and cost.

Typical tasks and responsibilities include:


  • Take ownership of a mechanical system and lead the design activity as an individual or in a small team.
  • Manage progression of the design through the engineering design process, identifying and agreeing deliverables for each design phase, and presenting and justifying the design to engineering assurance stakeholders at key design gates.
  • Ensure that the requirements and associated acceptance events for their area of responsibility are documented and then maintained throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Act as a system integrator, collaborating with suppliers to develop equipment which falls outside the company’s area of expertise, and ensuring successful integration into the greater system through cooperation with other business functions.
  • Undertake mechanical design, developing an optimal solution to meet the requirements while balancing quality, cost and schedule considerations.
  • Perform engineering activities including but not limited to; interface agreements, stress calculations, prototype testing, FMEA, safety hazard identification & mitigation, and design for manufacture.
  • Undertake planning activities to identify and define the scope, budget and timescales of tasks required to complete each of the design phases, including ongoing updates for areas of design responsibility.
  • Act as a mentor to junior engineers, supporting their professional development.
  • Formally check other engineers’ designs and design documentation.
  • Champion the inclusion of underrepresented groups by engaging with and developing employee resource groups, acting in a leadership capacity where required.
  • Partner with the D&I team to critically challenge the status quo, provide thought leadership and make a meaningful contribution to the development and implementation of the D&I strategy.
  • Own and/or contribute to business wide D&I activities, such as communications activity, sponsorship liaison and senior sponsorship & relationship management to ensure the achievement of the D&I strategy goals.
  • Use knowledge and expertise within own team and the wider business to support/enable teams to ensure understanding of the D&I strategic priorities. Create, facilitate and/or deliver workshops and activities in support of the D&I agenda.
  • Partner with, and informally mentor, senior leaders in their roles as D&I sponsors and allies.


    Key Skills and Knowledge


  • Proven design office experience.
  • Proficient in using NX CAD software for both 3D modelling and 2D drawing.
  • An understanding of stress analysis methods.
  • Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills, with experience delivering content to large groups and leading technical discussions.
  • Membership or working towards membership of a relevant institution and hold Chartered or Incorporated status with a thirst for CPD.
  • Demonstrate logical and pragmatic problem solving abilities
  • Practical and a self-starter, with an ability to work on own initiative and in teams.
  • Aware of own limitations, with a willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to challenge the status quo through astute insight, reasoned debate and sophisticated positioning of a point of view.
  • A resilient, positive individual with the ability to influence senior stakeholders in a multi-disciplinary and geographically dispersed organisation.
  • Inclusive and enquiring mind with a passion for successfully delivering change in a commercially challenging FTSE 250 environment.




    Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements (this may include obtaining security clearance (SC) or developed vetting (DV) level of security clearances).
